Weebly Review – All-Inclusive Website Builder

You have heard about it from your friends and colleagues. You have read about it in reviews and newspapers. You have seen its ads plastered all over… everywhere, it seems.

Weebly is one of the biggest names in the website builders world now. They are pretty similar to Wix or Squarespace.

More on those two in the bonus round later on.

So, the million-dollar question is obviously is Weebly any good?

Well, that is what we are here to find out today.

In this Weebly review, we are getting right to the core and essence of this website builder.

We will cover every aspect of Weebly, including its pricing and plans, templates, ease of use, features, customer support, and more.

So, grab yourself a cup of tea, a glass of milkshake, or whatever your beverage of choice is, and let’s get started.

Overview of Weebly

Weebly was created way back when Pluto was robbed of its “Planet” status — that’s 2006 if you need a little refresher.

Three college friends — Dave Rusenko, Chris Fanini, and Dan Veltri — founded the company when they were all undergraduates.

Today, Weebly is one of the most popular website builders in the market. It currently powers millions of businesses on more than 50 million sites.

That said, let’s start with a refresher of what are website builders.

Weebly Set Up

In general, website builders are programs that help you to build a website easily and quickly.

Most website builders do not require any prior coding or technical and technological knowledge.

That is why most builders come with drag-and-drop editors or what-you-see-is-what-you-get editing interfaces so that they are user-friendly.

For the most part, the aim is to have the editor and builder to be so easy that even total beginners would not run into any trouble navigating them.

Compare Weebly Plans

Weebly has two different lines of plans: one for websites and one for online stores.

For websites, Weebly offers a total of four plans: Free, Connect ($5.00/month), Pro ($12.00/month), and Business ($25.00/month).

These prices are for when you sign up to pay annually.

Let’s explore these plans for websites and their resources first.

Free Plan for Websites

First up is Weebly’s Free plan. This plan is for basic use and comes with free SSL security, 500MB of storage, and domain with Weebly branding.

However, the plan does not include any tools or features for eCommerce.

Connect Plan for Websites

Next in line is the Connect plan.

Here, all of its tools and resources are similar to the Free plan.

However, with this plan, you can connect a custom domain.

So, you are paying the $5.00 each month to use a custom domain.

In other words, that is the price you have to pay to get rid of the “Weebly” in your domain.

Pro Plan for Websites

Then you have Pro.

This plan is meant for groups and organizations. With this plan, you get free SSL security, free domain, unlimited storage, and site search.

Besides that, you can also connect a custom domain and remove Weebly ads with the Pro plan.

This plan also offers you selected eCommerce tools and features such as shopping cart and the ability to accept payments through Square and through 3rd party providers.

On top of that, the Pro plan offers phone support, too — in addition to chat and email support.

Business Plan for Websites

The last plan in the line of plans for websites, Business, is designed with small businesses and stores in mind.

This plan comes with the usual resources: free SSL security, free domain, unlimited storage, and site search.

And, just like Pro, you can connect a custom domain and remove Weebly ads.

But, with Business, you will have access to Weebly’s full list of tools and features.

This includes a shopping cart, item badges, item options, inventory management, automatic tax calculator, shipping calculator, and more.

Support is available via chat, email, and phone.

3 Online Stores Plans

Meanwhile, Weebly offers 3 plans for online stores: Pro ($12.00), Business ($25.00), and Business Plus ($38.00).

Again, these prices are for when you choose to be billed annually.

But, if you look closely, you will see that the Pro and Business plans here are exactly the same ones for websites.

So, there is really only one additional plan here: Business Plus.

Let’s delve deeper into this plan.

Business Plus is for “power sellers”. The plan comes with free SSL security, free domain, unlimited storage, and site search, too.

And, just like Weebly’s other plans, it allows you to connect a custom domain and remove Weebly ads.

Besides that, it also offers the full range of eCommerce features with the addition of abandoned cart emails and checking for real-time shipping rates.

On top of that, the plan comes with email marketing (that has $96.00 value), too.

Overall, Weebly’s plans are rather expensive. The prices are comparable to their competitors’ in the market but a tad bit higher.

Weebly Themes and Templates

Weebly Themes

Weebly’s collection of themes, or templates, is unfortunately rather limited.

Especially when you compare it with its competitors’.

For example, Wix offers over 500 templates for your choosing.

Well, we can tell you that Weebly’s total number of templates is nowhere near that.

From what we can see, the number of templates is below 100 which is far below.

Furthermore, some of these premium Weebly themes are only available through a paid plan.

However, to be fair to Weebly, while its collection is small, it does cover the majority of the niches that are in demand.

This includes blog, business, event, online store, personal, and portfolio.

Now, when it comes to the designs and the looks of the templates, Weebly fares a lot better.

For the most part, its templates are clean, modern, and attractive. Lots of white background with splashes of colors.

They are practically heaven-sent if you are into minimalistic designs.

Weebly’s Editor

Weebly’s editor is, fortunately, rather easy to use and fairly straightforward.

Now, when you first log into the editor, you will see quite a few elements and buttons all around.

Do not panic. Take a second look and you will realize that all of these components are carefully organized.

On top of that, the editor itself is also quite delightful. It is intuitive enough that you can easily navigate it, even if you are a complete novice.

Additionally, it is also rather responsive. So, there is no need to sit and twirl your fingers and wait for the interface to reflect your changes.

Oh, yes. That is a very common problem with website builders.

Many website builders are known to be slow, unresponsive, and prone to glitches.

But, not Weebly.

With Weebly’s editor, you can edit all sorts of things. This includes changes to texts, photos, fonts, colors, and more.

However, if there is one thing we do not like about Weebly’s editor is its relative lack of flexibility.

Unlike Wix’s editor where you can place any element anywhere you fancy on your page, Weebly’s editor has many more limitations.

Essentially, you can only add specific elements, buttons, and more into already-designated spots. While this is pretty common for website builders, we expected more considering the prices it charges. And, also, considering the many excellent competitors in the market.

Weebly for Online Stores

Now, we briefly touched on what Weebly offers for eCommerce and online stores earlier.

Let’s delve deeper into these features.

For online stores, Weebly includes quite a few features and tools in its packages.

There are the basic ones such as shopping cart, inventory management, and the ability to accept payments through third-party providers.

However, there are also other handy features and tools.

For starters, Weebly has item badges so that you can let your customers know that an item is sold out, unavailable, low on stock, or on sale.

Then, there are also automatic tax calculator and shipping calculator.

There is also a feature to automatically request item review form customers and post them on your website.

Weebly Business Plus offers abandoned cart emails that send reminder emails to your customers who did not complete their purchases too.

On top of that, Weebly Business Plus comes with a real-time shipping tool so that you can charge the most accurate shipping fees according to weight, destination, and carrier.

Weebly’s Extra Features

Not one to cut corners, Weebly also includes some other extra features in its plans.

One of such features is search engine optimization tools.

All of Weebly’s websites come with in-built SEO tools to help the site rank higher on Google and other search engines.

Built-in SEO tool

However, how helpful are those tools are yet to be seen.

There are also advanced site stats tools.

These show stats like which pages in your site are popular, which external sites referred traffic to your site, and how people find your site.

Weebly’s Support

Weebly offers three customer support channels: chat, email, and phone support.

However, not all of these support channels are available to all the plans.

Case in point, both Free and Connect do not have access to phone support which is a shame because some people prefer phone support.

In any case, Weebly has a community forum. In the forum, you can ask questions, commiserate, give feedback, and more.

From what we can see, the forum is pretty lively with lots of activities.

Apart from that, Weebly also has a resource center. Here, you can find a blog, developer documents, and more.

Back to our million-dollar question in the first place, while certainly, Webbly does worth $365 million with the latest acquisition.

But are they worthy of its rather steep prices?

Well, we hate to be vague but this ultimately boils down to what you need.

However, generally, we would say yes. Despite its premium prices and a less-than-flexible editor, Weebly is still one of the best website builders in the market.

Especially if you are a beginner when it comes to a website setup.

You would want to avoid the hassle of the domain purchase, hosting, CMS, coding, optimization and the list goes on.

With Weebly, you can do all that with a helping hand from them as well.

Its beautiful templates, comprehensive features for online stores, and great additional features firmly solidify its position in the market.

Weebly vs Squarespace

It shouldn’t matter much as Square had acquired Weebly for approximately $365 million in 2018.

If you can’t beat them, buy them. That’s what Square is doing to beat up Squarespace competitors.

The only difference would be your preferences as they are both coming from the same owner.

However, we would still like to stress out their differences in terms of the pricing plans.

Squarespace has no free plan and offers a simpler pricing plan than Weebly.

Weebly for Websites Weebly for Online Stores Squarespace Wix
Free – $0 Free – NA Personal – $12/mo Connect – $4.5/mo
Connect – $5/mo Pro – $12/mo Business – $18/mo Combo – $8.5/mo
Pro – $12/mo Business – $25/mo Basic Commerce – $26/mo Unlimited – $12.5/mo
Business – $25/mo Business Pro – $38/mo Advance Commerce – $40/mo VIP – $24.5/mo

So, which is better Wix or Squarespace/Weebly?

If you ask me, I would pick Wix over Weebly or Squarespace anytime.

Squarespace or Weebly would be perfect for blog hosting purposes, and they are also more professionally presented.

But Wix is very easy to use and thus would be more suitable for most beginners.

And they also had lower pricing compared to Weebly or Squarespace.
